Tax Free Prep Services
Tax-free Amazon FBA prep services refer to using prep centers located in states where sales tax is not charged on certain retail purchases. For many Amazon sellers—particularly those sourcing products through Online Arbitrage—this can reduce upfront sourcing costs by avoiding sales tax at the point of purchase. The strategy is based on where a product is delivered, not where it is ultimately sold or fulfilled by Amazon.
Delivery location matters because sales tax is typically applied when a retailer ships an order to a taxable address. By routing inventory to a prep center in a tax-free state, sellers may avoid paying sales tax on qualifying purchases before the products are prepared and forwarded to Amazon fulfillment centers. Prep centers play a central role in this process by acting as the receiving point, handling Amazon-required prep, and shipping inventory onward in compliance with FBA requirements.
This approach is most commonly used by Online Arbitrage sellers, but it can also apply in limited cases to Private Label sellers and international sellers routing inventory into the U.S. Tax-free prep is not a universal solution and may not be appropriate for every business model or product category, but for certain sellers, it can be a meaningful part of an overall sourcing and cost-management strategy.
In the United States, there are five states with no general statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. In practice, Montana, Delaware, Oregon, and New Hampshire are the states most commonly used for tax-free Amazon FBA prep. While Alaska is technically sales-tax-free at the state level, Amazon FBA prep services there are extremely limited, and there are currently no Amazon FBA fulfillment centers located in Alaska (as of 2026). As a result, Alaska is rarely used for prep workflows, whereas the other tax-free states support established prep centers and efficient shipping routes into Amazon’s fulfillment network.
